SDI stands for "Strategic Defense Initiative", which was the name of a proposal formulated in 1983 by former U.S. president Ronald Reagan to use ground- and space-based systems to protect the U.S. from nuclear missile attacks. The game is based on the SDI premise, which came to be more popularly known as the "Star Wars" programme.
